Setup

Players set up their individual player boards, place resource cubes on the main board, and prepare mission cards and dice for the game.

The rules, step by step

Setup
Players begin by setting up their individual player boards, which track resources, upgrades, and actions. Resource cubes (red, blue, black, white, yellow, purple) are placed on designated locations on the main desert board. Mission cards are shuffled and placed in a display, and dice are prepared in a dice tray. Each player chooses a character board, which has two sides for asymmetric or symmetric play, and places their starting tokens.
Objective
The main objective of Sand is to accumulate the highest number of victory points by the end of the game. Points are primarily earned through successfully completing mission cards, gaining the support of small tribes located across the desert, and collecting money, which also converts to victory points.
On your turn
Each round of Sand is divided into three phases: morning, noon, and night. During each phase, players take turns performing actions. The number of actions a player can take is determined by available action tokens on their player board, which can be limited by basic cargo or flipped action tokens. Players choose an action token (red, blue, black, white) and move it up, indicating it's used. The strength of the action is determined by the corresponding colored die in the shared dice tray. Players can spend money or white prayer resources to temporarily modify the die's value. Actions include moving their camel caravan, loading cargo, delivering cargo, writing songs, and performing special priest actions. After all players have taken their turns in a phase, the game proceeds to the next phase.
Scoring
Victory points are calculated at the end of the game. Players earn points from completed mission cards, with each card having specific conditions and point values. Support from small tribes also contributes to the final score, with the player having the most support from a tribe earning 12 points, and the second most earning 6 points. Additionally, any remaining money a player possesses is converted into victory points.
Game end
The game concludes after a predetermined number of rounds. For a 4-player game, this is 5 rounds. For 1-3 players, the game lasts 6 rounds. Once the final night phase of the last round is completed, players proceed to the final scoring phase to determine the winner.
Tips
To succeed in Sand, players should focus on efficient resource management and strategic planning. Upgrading your camel caravan can significantly reduce movement costs and increase cargo capacity. Pay close attention to market prices for goods to maximize profits when delivering cargo. Utilizing the prayer resources and money to modify dice rolls can be crucial for executing powerful actions. Adapting your strategy based on the available mission cards and the actions of other players is also key to victory.
