Setup
To set up the game, each player chooses a color and places their two builder pawns on any empty spaces on the 5x5 grid board. The game pieces include building blocks of three levels and dome pieces. God cards are shuffled and dealt according to the number of players, or chosen by players for advanced play.
Objective
The primary objective of Santorini is to be the first player to move one of your builder pawns to the third level of a building. This requires careful planning of moves and building actions to create opportunities for your builders while blocking your opponents.
On your turn
Each turn consists of two phases: first, move one of your builder pawns to an adjacent space (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally). Builders can move up one level, down any number of levels, or stay on the same level. They cannot move up two or more levels. Second, build a new level on any space adjacent to the builder you just moved. You can build the first, second, or third level of a building, or place a dome on top of a third-level building, which completes it and prevents further building on that space.
Scoring
A player wins the game immediately if one of their builders moves to a third-level building. There are no other scoring conditions in the basic game. God cards can introduce alternative win conditions or modify existing rules.
Game end
The game ends when a player achieves the objective of moving a builder to a third-level building. Additionally, if a player cannot make a valid move or build during their turn, they lose the game, and the other player wins.
