How do you play Sky Team?

Sky Team is a cooperative game for two players. Your objective is to successfully land a commercial aircraft at various airports around the world. To win, you and your partner must cooperate efficiently, make quick decisions, and ensure a safe landing. This involves communicating with air traffic control, regulating speed, stabilizing the aircraft, extending flaps, deploying landing gear, and activating brakes to stop the plane safely after touchdown. Success depends on perfect coordination, careful planning, and nerves of steel.

Setup

Place the control panel between players, with the plane axis disc in its slot and all 10 switches on green lights. Place the blue aerodynamic marker between spaces 4 and 5, the orange one between 8 and 9, and the brake marker to the left of space 2. Insert the altitude indicator and approach track into their slots, then place plane tokens on the approach track and coffee tokens next to the control panel.

The rules, step by step

Setup
Place the control panel between the two players, ideally with both players on the same side of the table. Insert the plane axis disc into its corresponding slot, ensuring the arrow points to the black triangle at the top, and all 10 switches cover the green lights. Place the blue aerodynamic marker on the speed indicator between spaces 4 and 5, and the orange aerodynamic marker between spaces 8 and 9. Place the brake marker to the left of space 2 on the brake track. Insert the altitude indicator into the top-right slot of the control panel, with the green-yellow side up, until '6000' is visible. Insert the Montreal-Trudeau approach track into the top-left slot until the cloud pictogram is visible. Place a number of plane tokens on each traffic pictogram on the approach track equal to the number of planes shown. Create a reserve of coffee tokens next to the control panel.
Objective
Sky Team is a cooperative game for two players. Your objective is to successfully land a commercial aircraft at various airports around the world. To win, you and your partner must cooperate efficiently, make quick decisions, and ensure a safe landing. This involves communicating with air traffic control, regulating speed, stabilizing the aircraft, extending flaps, deploying landing gear, and activating brakes to stop the plane safely after touchdown. Success depends on perfect coordination, careful planning, and nerves of steel.
On your turn
The game unfolds over seven rounds, each divided into three phases. Phase 1: Strategy Discussion and Dice Roll. At the start of each round, players can freely discuss strategies for the current round, focusing on objectives and areas to prioritize, but cannot discuss specific dice values. If a 'reroll' token is present on the current altitude screen, move it to the top-left corner of the control panel. Either player can spend a 'reroll' token to allow both players to reroll one or more of their dice once. Each player then rolls their dice behind their player screen, keeping them hidden from their partner. From this point until the end of the round, communication is forbidden, except for clarifying rules. Phase 2: Dice Placement. Starting with the player indicated by the arrow on the current altitude screen (the pilot in this example), players take turns placing one die at a time on an empty space on the control panel. The control panel has seven different zones, each with specific color and/or value requirements. Only the pilot can place dice on blue spaces, and only the co-pilot on orange spaces; both can place on dual-colored spaces. Spaces requiring a specific number need a die of that value. Spaces with two values separated by a slash allow choosing either value. Phase 3: End of Round. After all eight dice have been placed, the round ends, and communication is permitted again. The plane descends by 1000 feet (advance the altitude indicator one space). Players retrieve all their dice and proceed to the next round.
Scoring
Winning in Sky Team requires meeting several conditions by the end of the final round. All plane tokens must be removed from the approach track. All switches for flaps and landing gear must be activated (showing green lights). The plane's axis must be perfectly horizontal (arrow pointing to the black triangle). Finally, the plane's speed must be less than the brake power. If all these conditions are met, you and your partner successfully landed the plane and win the game. If any of these conditions are not met, or if the plane crashes (axis arrow passes 'X' symbol, or plane collides with other aircraft on the approach track), or if any mandatory action space is empty at the end of a round, players lose.
Game end
The game ends immediately if the plane crashes. A crash occurs if the axis arrow passes the 'X' symbol, or if the plane collides with other aircraft on the approach track (i.e., you advance into a space already occupied by plane tokens). The game also ends immediately if any of the four mandatory action spaces (marked with a special symbol) are empty at the end of a round. If any of these conditions are met, you lose. The final round begins when the airport image appears on the current position screen. If the plane's image is not on the current altitude screen when the airport image appears on the current position screen, you are in a holding pattern and must play one or more rounds without advancing on the approach track, thus reducing speed. If the airport image is not on the current position screen, but the plane image is on the current altitude screen, you have crash-landed before reaching the airport and lose. If, at the end of the final round, all plane tokens are removed from the approach track, all flaps and landing gear switches are green, the plane's axis is horizontal, and the plane's speed is less than the brake power, you win.
Tips
The 'Axis' section determines the plane's tilt. The first die placed has no immediate effect, but the second die rotates the axis arrow towards the higher value die by a number of spaces equal to the difference between the two dice. If the axis arrow reaches or passes the 'X' symbol, the plane crashes. The axis does not reset between rounds. The 'Engines' section controls the plane's advancement on the approach track. The first die placed has no immediate effect. The second die's value, when added to the first, determines the plane's speed. Compare this speed to the aerodynamic markers. If the sum is greater than the orange marker, advance two spaces. If between markers, advance one space. If less than the blue marker, do not advance. Plane tokens on the approach track represent other aircraft; colliding with them results in a crash. The 'Radio' section allows communication with air traffic control. Placing a die of your color removes a plane token from the approach track. The 'Landing Gear' section is activated by the pilot. Placing a die of a specific value activates a switch, moving it to green. Activating landing gear increases drag, slowing the plane (move the blue aerodynamic marker one space forward). All three switches must be activated to win. The 'Flaps' section is activated by the co-pilot. Placing a die of a specific value activates a switch, moving it to green. Flaps must be activated in order from top to bottom. Activating flaps increases lift and drag, slowing the plane (move the orange aerodynamic marker one space forward). All four switches must be activated to win. The 'Concentration' section allows players to adjust die values. By placing a die of any value on a coffee space, you immediately gain a coffee token. Coffee tokens can be spent to increase or decrease a die's value by one. Die values can only be adjusted between 1 and 6. The 'Brakes' section is activated by the pilot. Placing a die of a specific value activates a brake switch, moving it to green. Brakes must be activated in order from left to right. Not all brakes need to be activated, but the total brake power (sum of activated brake values) must be greater than the plane's speed at the end of the final round to win. If the brake power is less than 2, the plane crashes. In the final round, the plane's speed is compared to the brake power instead of the aerodynamic markers.
