The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Smash Up: It's Your Fault!, each player is dealt a selection of faction decks chosen by the community. Players select two different factions and shuffle them together to create a single personalized deck of forty cards. A set number of base cards, depending on the player count, are placed in the center of the play area. Each player draws an initial hand of five cards from their custom faction deck, and victory point counters are placed nearby.
Objective
The main objective in Smash Up is to accumulate the most victory points by capturing shared bases. Players must strategically deploy minions with various power levels and abilities onto different bases, combining the unique strengths of their two chosen factions to outmuscle opponents and score points before anyone else.
On your turn
On your turn, you may play up to one action card and one minion card from your hand onto bases. Actions provide special effects, modify bases, or disrupt opponents, while minions contribute power toward conquering bases. Some cards allow extra plays or movement. After playing cards, you resolve any ongoing base abilities and draw two new cards to replenish your hand before ending your turn.
Scoring
Bases feature a specific breakpoint value. Whenever the total power of all players' minions on a base equals or exceeds that breakpoint, the base scores immediately. Players with minions present are ranked by their total power contribution. The player with the most power claims first place and the highest victory point reward, while runners-up receive lesser points. Once scored, winning minions are discarded, new bases replace the old ones, and control shifts.
Game end
The game continues in a clockwise rotation until at least one player reaches or exceeds fifteen victory points at the end of a scoring phase. If multiple players reach the threshold simultaneously, the player with the most points wins, or tie-breakers apply as specified in the rulebook.
Tips
To maximize success, analyze how your two chosen factions interact; pairing heavy hitters like sharks or dragons with utility factions can cover strategic weaknesses. Pay close attention to base abilities and opponents' card counts to time your major plays efficiently.
