The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up a game of Smash Up, each player selects two faction decks and shuffles them together to form a single combined draw pile of forty cards. Players then draw an initial hand of five cards, and a number of base cards equal to the number of players plus one are placed face up in the center of the playing area.
Objective
The objective is to combine two distinct factions—such as vampires, werewolves, mad scientists, or giant ants—and use their combined strengths to capture bases and accumulate victory points. Players must strategically deploy minions and trigger special abilities to outmaneuver rivals at shared locations.
On your turn
On your turn, you may play up to one minion card and one action card from your hand onto any active base. After resolving any card effects, draw two cards from your deck to replenish your hand before passing the turn to the next player.
Scoring
Whenever the total power of all minions played by all players on a single base equals or exceeds that base's breakpoint, the base scores immediately. Players are ranked by their total minion power at that base, and victory points are distributed to the top contributors according to the base's printed point values.
Game end
The game continues in rounds until at least one player accumulates a total of 15 or more victory points at the end of a scoring phase. If multiple players reach the threshold simultaneously, the player with the most points wins.
Tips
Pay close attention to faction synergies and base text rules. Monster Smash factions like vampires and werewolves thrive on destroying minions and manipulating power counters, so timing your plays around base breakpoints is crucial for victory.
