To set up Star Trek: Captain's Chair, each player selects a distinct faction, taking their corresponding player board, starting deck of cards, and flagship miniature. The central game board is placed between both opponents, featuring movement spaces and tactical zones. Shuffle the shared market deck and reveal a selection of available crew and upgrade cards nearby. Each player shuffles their personal deck, draws an initial hand of cards, and places their flagship at its designated starting position to begin the strategic confrontation.

The main objective of the game is to successfully outwit and overpower your rival in a tactical duel of starships. You must manage your resources efficiently, deploy iconic crew members, and utilize your ship's specific capabilities to wear down the enemy flagship while protecting your own from destruction.

During a player's turn, they play cards from their hand to generate action points and activate special abilities. These points are spent to maneuver across the grid, fire ship weapons, activate shields, or recruit powerful new cards from the central market into their personal discard pile. Managing hand efficiency and anticipating enemy movements is crucial during every phase of your turn.

Success in Star Trek: Captain's Chair is measured purely by survival and destruction. Players do not collect traditional victory points; instead, combat deals direct damage to the opposing flagship's hull points, bringing them closer to total defeat with every successful attack.

The game concludes instantly the moment one player's flagship suffers enough damage to reduce its hull value to zero. The player whose ship remains operational is declared the winner and master tactician.
