Players must strategically navigate the galaxy, balancing risk and reward to earn fame efficiently while avoiding the wrath of rival factions and bounty hunters.

A player's turn in Star Wars: Outer Rim consists of three main phases: the Planning Phase, the Action Phase, and the Encounter Phase. During the Planning Phase, players can move their ship up to their speed limit, choosing a path through the galaxy. The Action Phase allows players to perform various actions such as buying and selling cargo, upgrading their ship, completing jobs, or engaging in combat. Finally, the Encounter Phase involves drawing and resolving an encounter card based on the planet or space sector the player's ship currently occupies, often leading to narrative choices and skill checks.

Scoring in Star Wars: Outer Rim is primarily based on accumulating fame points. Players earn fame by successfully completing jobs, which often involve transporting cargo or hunting bounties. Delivering illegal cargo to specific planets also grants fame, as does defeating patrol ships and other player characters in combat. Some character-specific objectives or unique card effects may also provide fame. The game is a race to 10 fame points, so players must constantly seek opportunities to increase their fame while managing their resources and avoiding setbacks.

The game concludes immediately when any player reaches 10 fame points. That player is then declared the winner of Star Wars: Outer Rim. There are no tie-breaking rules; if multiple players reach 10 fame simultaneously, the game rules specify how to determine the winner, usually by who achieved it first or by other secondary criteria. The focus is on a clear race to the finish, encouraging aggressive play and strategic decision-making to outpace opponents.
