The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Stephenson's Rocket, first place the main game board in the center of the play area. Next, place each colored locomotive on its matching starting town. Each player chooses a color and takes their corresponding player board, stations, industry cubes, and markers. Players place seven markers on '0' of each rail share track on their player board, and one marker on '0' of the prestige track. Create supply pools for indicator cubes, passenger pawns, X signs, regular track tiles, and connector track tiles next to the main board. Finally, randomly choose a starting player.
Objective
The objective of Stephenson's Rocket is to become the most prestigious rail baron by accumulating the most prestige points by the end of the game. Prestige points are earned throughout the game by extending rail lines, building stations, investing in industries, and merging rail lines. The game concludes when specific end-game conditions are met, at which point final scoring determines the winner.
On your turn
During a player's turn, starting with the first player and proceeding clockwise, each player takes two actions. These actions can be different or the same action twice, with the exception that a player cannot extend the same rail line twice in a single turn. The three possible actions are: extending a line, building a station, or investing in an industry. Players should strategically choose their actions to maximize their prestige points and influence over the rail network.
Scoring
Prestige points are scored during player turns through three main actions. Connecting to a city scores points for players with the most and second-most investment cubes in that city's industry. Connecting to a town scores points for players with the most and second-most stations on the connected rail line. Merging two lines awards prestige points to the player with the most shares in the dissolved line, based on connected cities, towns, and starting towns. Ties for first and second place in scoring categories result in splitting the total points, rounded down. Additionally, dissolved shares are traded in at a 2-for-1 ratio for shares in the new line, and an X sign is placed on the dissolved rail line.
Game end
The game ends when one of two conditions is met: either only one rail line remains that can award shares (all others are dissolved or isolated), or all regular track tiles have been placed or discarded from the supply. Once an end-game condition is triggered, the game proceeds to a final scoring phase. This phase involves scoring for passengers, industries, stations, and shares. The player with the highest total prestige points after final scoring is declared the most prestigious rail baron and wins the game.
Tips
To excel in Stephenson's Rocket, focus on strategic share acquisition and station placement. Investing in industries early can provide consistent prestige, especially if you can dominate a city's industry. When extending lines, prioritize connections to cities and towns to trigger scoring opportunities. Be opportunistic with merging lines, as this can yield significant prestige for the majority shareholder and consolidate your power. Pay attention to your opponents' shares and investments to anticipate their moves and block their scoring opportunities, while also avoiding having your own lines isolated.
