Setup
Select chapter one's first clock puzzle, shuffle and deal 12 cards (4 per player in a 3-player game) face-down as secret hands.
The rules, step by step
Setup
Take time begins by opening the first chapter envelope containing four clock puzzles and setting aside the rest. Shuffle the 24-card deck consisting of white solar and navy lunar cards, numbered one through 12 twice. Deal 12 cards total, giving each of the three players four cards. Players must keep their dealt cards face down and are strictly prohibited from looking at their hands until the second phase of the game begins.
Objective
The goal of Take Time is a cooperative puzzle experience where players work together to correctly arrange cards onto clock segments, satisfying numerical constraints and specific segment rules to complete each clock.
On your turn
A round consists of a discussion phase where players strategize looking at the clock puzzle layout, followed by a playing phase where no further communication is allowed. Starting with the lowest solar card, players take turns playing one card face-down in clockwise order onto any clock segment, keeping card values hidden from others until revealed during scoring.
Scoring
Scoring happens when all cards are played onto the clock. Verification checks three main rules: every segment must have at least one card, the clock hand must point to a segment with the lowest sum, and subsequent clockwise segments must have equal or higher sums without exceeding 24 (unless an infinity symbol is present).
Game end
If all conditions are met, the clock puzzle is solved successfully, and the clock is returned to its sleeve before moving to the next one. If it fails, players shuffle and try again using a bonus token for an extra card play or place the puzzle in the sleeve of regrets to try later.
Tips
Success relies heavily on memorizing the initial discussion phase, keeping track of card values played by others, and carefully managing low-value cards for the starting segments to ensure an ascending numerical progression around the clock.
