The rules, step by step
Setup
Each player receives a hand of five cat cards. Each card has two sides: one depicting a regular cat and the other a super cat. These cards are used throughout both phases of the game to represent the state of each player's cat team.
Objective
The game is divided into two phases. In phase one, the individual objective is to be the first player to successfully transform all five of your cat cards from regular cats into super cats. In phase two, the player who achieved this becomes the 'Hero' and their objective is to defeat a central 'Robo Dog' made up of several cards. All other players become the 'Robo Dog' team, and their objective is to prevent the Hero from defeating the Robo Dog by turning the Hero's super cats back into regular cats.
On your turn
Turns are played simultaneously. In phase one, all players yell "Super Cats" and reveal a number of fingers. The player who reveals the largest unique number of fingers gets to perform an action, typically flipping a cat card to its super cat side. In phase two, the Hero yells "Robo Dog" while other players also yell "Robo Dog" and reveal fingers. If the Hero reveals a unique number of fingers, they flip that many Robo Dog cards. If the Hero's number is not unique, the Robo Dog players with unique numbers flip that many of the Hero's super cat cards back to regular cats.
Scoring
This game does not involve traditional scoring. Instead, it is a game of direct competition or cooperation where one side emerges victorious. The game's outcome is determined by whether the Hero or the Robo Dog team achieves their respective objectives first.
Game end
Phase one concludes as soon as one player successfully transforms all five of their cat cards into super cats. This player then becomes the Hero for phase two. Phase two ends immediately when either the Hero successfully flips all the Robo Dog cards to their defeated side, resulting in a Hero victory, or when all of the Hero's super cat cards are flipped back to their regular cat side by the Robo Dog players, resulting in a Robo Dog team victory.
Tips
Effective communication and strategic thinking are crucial for success in Super Cats. In phase one, players should try to anticipate what numbers others might play to ensure they reveal a unique, high number. In phase two, the Hero needs to carefully consider their finger reveal to maximize damage to the Robo Dog, while the Robo Dog players must coordinate to prevent the Hero from having a unique number, thereby flipping the Hero's super cats back to regular cats.
