Setup
During setup, place the new Venus board next to the main game board and place the white marker on 0%. Objective
The primary objective remains to terraform Mars by reaching target levels for temperature, oxygen, and ocean. While terraforming Venus offers additional opportunities for TR and bonuses, it is not a requirement for the game to end; only Mars's parameters need to be fully terraformed.
On your turn
If playing with Venus Next, a new phase called the Solar Phase is performed after each Production Phase. This phase has two steps: Step 1: Check for Game End. If temperature, oxygen, and ocean levels are all terraformed, the game ends as usual, and no Solar Phase is conducted. Step 2: World Government Terraforming. The first player acts as the World Government and chooses one global parameter that is not yet completed (temperature, oxygen, ocean, or Venus) and raises it by one step or places an ocean tile. All bonuses from this action go to the World Government (the first player receives no personal benefit), but other cards may be activated by this action.
Scoring
Players earn victory points through various means, including the Venus track, which provides TR and card draws at specific percentages (8% and 16%). The new Hoverlord milestone is achieved by having at least seven floater resources on your cards. The new Venusphile award is for the player with the most Venus tags on their cards. Floaters are a new resource collected on cards, similar to microbes or animals, and contribute to the Hoverlord milestone.
Game end
The game concludes when Mars's temperature, oxygen, and ocean levels have all reached their maximum terraforming requirements. The progress of Venus does not affect the game's end condition. If the World Government Terraforming action in the Solar Phase causes all Mars parameters to be completed, players still play one more generation before the game ends.
Tips
Consider the strategic implications of the Venus parameter. While not essential for game end, advancing Venus can provide valuable TR and card bonuses. The new standard project, 'Air Scrapping,' allows players to pay 15 MC to increase Venus by one step, granting TR. Cards that affect global requirements also impact Venus. In solo play, the goal is to maximize all four global parameters, including Venus, starting with 14 TR and 14 generations, with the World Government assisting in each Solar Phase.
