The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, each player takes a score sheet and a marker. The game box is opened and placed in the center of the playing area, with the silver tray inside. All six colored dice (white, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple) are placed next to the box. Players then decide who will be the first player, which can be done by any agreed-upon method.
Objective
The main objective of That's Pretty Clever! is to accumulate the highest total score by the end of the game. Players achieve this by strategically selecting dice after each roll to mark off numbers and earn bonuses on their individual score sheets. The game rewards clever combinations and efficient use of dice, as certain marks can trigger chain reactions of bonuses, leading to higher scores.
On your turn
A turn consists of three rolls by the active player. For each roll, the active player rolls all available dice, chooses one die to mark a corresponding space on their score sheet (based on color and value), and then places all dice with values lower than the chosen die onto the silver tray in the game box. These dice are no longer available to the active player for subsequent rolls in that turn. After the active player completes their three selections, all passive players (non-active players) may choose one die from the silver tray to mark a space on their own score sheets. The blue die is special, as its value is always added to the white die's value when chosen, and this combined sum is used to mark a space in the blue section. If a die is chosen, it is placed on the player's personal board, and any dice with a lower value are placed on the silver tray. This process is repeated three times, or until no dice remain for the active player to choose. After the active player's turn, all other players can choose one die from the silver tray to mark on their sheet.
Scoring
Scoring occurs at the end of the game. Points are awarded for completing rows and columns in the yellow and blue sections, with specific point values indicated on the board. The green section awards points based on how far along the track a player has marked. The orange and purple sections award points based on the sum of the numbers written in their respective rows. Additionally, each fox icon marked on the score sheet grants points equal to the lowest score achieved in any of the five colored sections (yellow, blue, green, orange, purple). If a player has not scored any points in a particular colored section, that section's score is considered zero for the purpose of fox scoring.
Game end
The game concludes after a predetermined number of rounds, which varies based on the number of players: four rounds for four players, five rounds for three players, and six rounds for one or two players. At the end of the final round, each player calculates their total score by summing points from all completed sections and any fox bonuses. The player with the highest total score is declared the winner. In solo play, the objective is to achieve the highest possible score, often compared against a scoring table provided in the rulebook to gauge performance.
Tips
To excel in That's Pretty Clever!, players should prioritize creating combos by strategically marking spaces that trigger bonuses, such as re-rolls, extra dice, or immediate marks in other sections. It's crucial to consider not only your own score but also how your dice choices affect opponents, especially when placing dice on the silver tray. Maximizing the value of your fox bonuses by keeping your lowest-scoring color as high as possible is also a key strategy. In the green section, aim for consistent progression to unlock higher point values, while in the orange and purple sections, focus on writing high numbers to boost your sums. Balancing immediate gains with long-term combo potential is essential for high scores.
