The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up The Artemis Project, place the central game board in the middle of the table surrounded by supply piles of minerals, energy, toolkits, and expedition badges. Separate the ocean surface building tiles into rounds one through three and four through six, place them near the gantry, and set out the expedition cards near base camp. Each player receives a player mat, a set of dice in their color, starting resources, and three colonists, with the remaining colonists placed in the draw bag or spaceship.
Objective
The main objective of The Artemis Project is to build and manage the most successful colony on the icy moon of Europa. Players compete to gather resources, recruit colonists, construct surface and geothermal buildings, and successfully complete hazardous expeditions to earn victory points.
On your turn
Turns are divided into distinct phases starting with placement, where players roll their dice and take turns placing them onto various board locations such as base camp, gantry, doorstep, and the academy. Following placement, players enter the resolution phase, where regions are resolved in numerical order from one to six, determining resource collection, building purchases, and colonist recruitment. The round concludes with upkeep, where players swap and activate colonists, refresh the game board, and prepare for the next round.
Scoring
Scoring happens at the end of the game based on several categories: victory points for uncombined saved energy and minerals up to a maximum limit, fully staffed surface buildings, total number of buildings constructed, complete sets of four colonist types, leftover colonists, expedition badges collected, and most toolkits.
Game end
The game concludes automatically at the end of the sixth round following the final upkeep phase. Final scoring is then tallied using the score pad, and the player with the highest total victory points wins the game, with ties broken by turn order.
Tips
Success in The Artemis Project relies on strategic planning and adaptability. Pay close attention to dice values when placing on the board, as lower dice can sometimes secure better positions or trigger specific abilities, and ensure you maintain a healthy balance between resource gathering and building construction.
