The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up The Game, place four start cards in a vertical or horizontal row: two ascending piles starting at 1 and two descending piles starting at 100. Shuffle the remaining deck and deal 6 cards to each player, or 7 cards for two-player games, and 8 cards for solo play. Place the rest of the cards face down to form the draw pile.
Objective
The main objective of The Game is cooperative: all players work together to discard all cards from the deck and their hands onto the four piles before anyone gets stuck with no valid moves left.
On your turn
During your turn, you must play at least two cards from your hand onto one or more of the four piles. Ascending piles require cards with higher numbers than the top card, while descending piles require lower numbers. After playing your cards, you replenish your hand from the draw pile before the next player takes their turn.
Scoring
Scoring is calculated at the end of the game by counting all unplayed cards remaining in player hands plus any cards left in the draw pile. Scoring fewer than 10 unplayed cards is considered a fantastic victory, while higher counts encourage you to try again.
Game end
The game ends immediately whenever a player is required to play at least two cards but cannot legally do so because all available options violate the ascending or descending rules for every pile.
Tips
Communication is strictly limited: you cannot speak about specific numbers in your hand, but you can talk generally about pacing, such as asking teammates to stay away from a specific pile. Additionally, take advantage of the special rule allowing you to play a card exactly 10 points in the reverse direction of a pile to save a difficult situation.
