The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up The Hunger, lay out the central board depicting the castle, plains, and mazes. Shuffle the hunt cards into a market display and place various tokens (like crypts, hunt markers, and bonus tiles) on their respective board locations. Each player receives a starting deck of 15 cards featuring a vampire speed progression from 1 to 4, a unique player marker, and a player mat to track their discard, deck, and digested humans. Random or drafted bonus objective cards are assigned to give players distinct end-game scoring paths.
Objective
The main goal of The Hunger is to collect the most victory points by hunting humans, securing powerful familiars, and acquiring eternal roses. Players must carefully manage their vampire's speed and deck composition to venture out into the maze, harvest prey, and sprint back to the safety of the castle before the sun rises.
On your turn
A player's turn consists of drawing three cards from their deck, resolving any permanent card effects, and playing cards to calculate their total speed. Using this speed, players move across the board's paths, visiting locations like taverns, temples, or crypts. They can spend movement and hunt actions to recruit humans or familiars into their discard pile, manage their deck, or trigger special map spaces. Once actions are complete, players must ensure they have enough speed to return to the castle or face severe sunlight penalties.
Scoring
Scoring happens at the end of the game based on several factors. Players earn points printed directly on their hunted human and familiar cards. Additional points are awarded for completing specific personal objective tiles, such as being the most specialized zoologist, animal lover, or gourmet. Eternal roses collected from the labyrinth also provide massive endgame points and persistent abilities.
Game end
The game automatically concludes after exactly 15 rounds, tracked by a central round marker. Alternatively, it can end early if all vampires successfully return to the castle or are eliminated by the sunrise. Players who fail to reach the castle before the 15th round suffer heavy point deductions or are disqualified from winning.
Tips
To succeed in The Hunger, avoid overextending your movement early on; collecting too many slow humans can bog down your deck and prevent you from making it back to the castle in time. Balance your high-value card purchases with deck-thinning strategies, and keep a close eye on your opponents to secure valuable bonus objectives before they do.
