short answer

How do you play The Resistance?

The overarching goal depends entirely on your secret faction. The Resistance wants to liberate society by successfully completing three out of five perilous missions. Conversely, the Spies aim to infiltrate these operations and ensure that at least three missions end in failure, or alternatively, force enough team proposal rejections to win through civil unrest.

Setup

Players receive hidden role cards determining if they are Resistance members or Spies, and the score track is set based on player count.

The rules, step by step

Setup
The game setup adapts to the player count, ranging from five to ten participants. Each player receives a hidden identity card: either a loyal member of the Resistance or an undercover Spy. The appropriate mission board is selected, tracking markers are placed on the first mission, and vote trackers are initialized. Spies briefly reveal themselves to each other in secret during a special phase so they can coordinate their deception, while the Resistance members remain entirely in the dark about who among them can be trusted.
Objective
The overarching goal depends entirely on your secret faction. The Resistance wants to liberate society by successfully completing three out of five perilous missions. Conversely, the Spies aim to infiltrate these operations and ensure that at least three missions end in failure, or alternatively, force enough team proposal rejections to win through civil unrest.
On your turn
Each round begins with a designated leader who proposes a specific team of players to undertake the current mission. Before any mission can proceed, all players participate in a simultaneous, secret vote either approving or rejecting the proposed roster. If a majority approves, the team advances. If rejected, the leadership token moves clockwise, and repeated rejections eventually hand victory directly to the spies.
Scoring
Once a team is approved, its members secretly submit either a Success or a Fail card. Resistance members must always play Success, while Spies can choose either. These cards are shuffled anonymously and revealed. If any Fail card appears—or two on mission four during larger player counts—the mission fails, moving a marker toward the spy victory condition.
Game end
The game concludes immediately when either side achieves their win condition: the Resistance wins by successfully passing three missions, or the Spies win by sabotaging three missions or accumulating five consecutive failed team proposals.
Tips
Success relies heavily on psychological deduction, careful observation of voting habits, and bluffing. If you are a Resistance member, look for subtle inconsistencies and defend your reasoning. If you are a spy, blend in seamlessly, build trust, and time your sabotage carefully to avoid early suspicion.
