The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up, place the main game board in the center of the playing area. Each player receives two player sheets: one for their garden and perennials, and another for their apiary, fruit, and shed. Place the orange dice, the pumpkin first player token, and the blue round marker nearby. Ensure each player has a pencil for marking their sheets.
Objective
The objective of Three Sisters is to earn the most victory points by the end of eight rounds. Players achieve this by strategically planting and watering various crops in their garden, harvesting fruits from trees and bushes, developing their apiary, and upgrading their shed with useful items. Points are accumulated throughout the game and tallied at the end.
On your turn
Each round, the first player rolls a number of orange dice (depending on player count). These dice are grouped by value and placed clockwise around the rondel. Players take turns choosing a group of dice, using its value to perform a garden action (plant or water crops in the corresponding garden section) and a rondel action (based on the die's position). After all players have chosen, the rondel space with the lowest remaining die value triggers a shared action for all players. Finally, an event (Shed, Rain, or Farmer's Market) occurs, as indicated on the round tracker.
Scoring
At the end of the game, points are scored from various sections of the player sheets. Each completed corn crop is worth 3 points, and each completed bean crop is worth 1 point. Perennials award points based on their completed boxes. Apiary items (wax and honey) and fruit (apples, peaches, blackberries, raspberries) provide points or goods when harvested. Shed upgrades can grant ongoing bonuses or end-game points. Goods collected throughout the game also contribute to the final score, with higher quantities yielding better actions at the Farmer's Market.
Game end
The game concludes after the eighth round has been completed. Players then tally their final scores from their garden, perennials, apiary, fruit, and shed sections. The player with the highest total score is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the most goods wins.
Tips
Three Sisters is a roll-and-write game that emphasizes strategic choices and action combos. Players should focus on planning their planting and watering actions to maximize harvests and trigger perennial bonuses. Utilizing compost to adjust die values can be crucial for targeting specific garden sections. Efficiently filling in goods and shed upgrades can unlock powerful bonus actions and ongoing benefits. The interaction on the rondel, where players compete for dice, adds a layer of tactical decision-making, as taking a desired die might also give opponents a beneficial shared action.
