Setup

Assemble the initial road, place hazard tokens, set up damage tokens and FX dice, and each player collects their cars, chopper, and movement dice.

The rules, step by step

Setup
To set up, first, create the initial road by selecting a Chapter 1 road tile (either A or B side) as the rear road tile, then shuffle the remaining road tiles (randomizing sides) to form a draw stack. Draw the top two tiles from the stack to become the middle and lead road tiles, placing them in front of the rear tile. Place the remaining road tiles and the finish line tile nearby. Shuffle all hazard tokens face down and place one face down on each highway space marked with a matching red hazard symbol, skipping player-count specific symbols if not applicable. Keep leftover hazard tokens nearby. Shuffle damage tokens face down into a pile, and place the FX dice and car wrecks nearby. Each player chooses a color, collects their matching command tile, three dashboards (small, medium, large), three cars, one chopper, and four movement dice. Arrange dashboards from small to large to the right of the command tile, and place cars to the left of the rear road tile in the starting area. Players roll their movement dice, and the player with the lowest total becomes the first player, collecting the gray road die. If there's a tie for the lowest total, all tied players re-roll until a single lowest total is determined. The road die is rolled by the first player and set beside the highway.
Objective
The objective of Thunder Road: Vendetta is to be the last player standing or the first to cross the finish line. You win if you are the first player to successfully move any one of your cars onto the finish line tile. Alternatively, if all other players have had all their cars eliminated or rendered inoperable, and you are the only player remaining with at least one operable car, you win the game.
On your turn
A player's turn consists of four steps, performed in order: 1. Assign: Pick one of your unassigned movement dice and place it on the center of an operable car's dashboard that doesn't already have a die. You can also assign a die to a 'coast' space on a car that has already moved this round, or (once per round) to a command space on your command board. 2. Activate a Command: If you assigned a die to a command space this turn, resolve that command's effect. Commands include Nitro (extra movement), Repair (remove damage), Drift (ignore first slam), and Airstrike (place and shoot your chopper). 3. Move: Move the car assigned a die (either in step 1 or a coast die) a number of spaces equal to the die's value. The first move is from the starting area onto the rear road tile. Subsequent moves are into adjacent spaces in the car's front arc. Different terrain types (road, off-road, mud) have different movement costs. Entering an impassable space eliminates the car. If you move into a space with another vehicle, a 'slam' occurs, resolving with FX dice rolls to determine movement and potential damage. 4. Shoot: The car you moved this turn may shoot its guns at a single road vehicle in its front arc (not choppers). Roll the shooting die; if the result matches the target's size, the target takes damage. Inoperable cars cannot shoot.
Scoring
Thunder Road: Vendetta is not a points-based game. Victory is determined by achieving specific conditions related to car survival and reaching the finish line, rather than accumulating points.
Game end
The game ends immediately when one of two conditions is met: 1. A player successfully moves any of their cars onto the finish line tile. That player is declared the winner. 2. In a game with three or more players, if all but one player have had all their cars eliminated or rendered inoperable, the remaining player wins. In a two-player game, this condition is met if one player has all their cars eliminated or inoperable, and the other player still has operable cars. Additionally, if a car moves off the front of the lead road tile, all cars on the rear tile are eliminated, the rear tile is flipped and moved to the bottom of the draw pile, a new lead tile is drawn, and new hazards are placed. If a two-player game reaches the fifth road tile, the finish line is immediately added to the end of the lead road tile.
Tips
Mastering movement is key: understand terrain costs, how to initiate and resolve slams, and when to use the road die for extra movement. Strategic use of commands like Nitro for speed boosts, Repair to keep cars operable, and Airstrike to disrupt opponents can turn the tide. Knowing when to eliminate your own car or when to force opponents off the road can be a crucial tactical decision. Pay attention to the unique effects of different hazard and damage tokens, as they can significantly impact the race. In multiplayer games, eliminating opponents is a viable path to victory, so don't shy away from aggressive plays.
