The rules, step by step
Setup
Players choose a magician card, ensuring each magician's preferred illusion category is unique. Each player receives their chosen magician's card, a poster, a starting trick card from their magician's preferred school of magic, and components worth no more than two coins. If a player chooses all components required for their starting trick, they set it up for free. Each player also receives an identical hand of nine assignment cards and chooses one of three specialist co-workers, which grants extra components, an extra level one trick, or an extra apprentice. Players also get one shard, a stack of trick and symbol markers in their player color, and ten coins. Finally, each player receives character discs: one for their magician, one for a lackey apprentice, and one for their chosen specialist. One of each player's cylinders is placed on the fame track at number five in the theater, and the remaining cylinders are randomly placed on the turn order spots for the first week. In a two-player game, only the first and third turn order slots are used. Players who do not end up as first player in the turn order lottery receive additional coins (two, four, or six) to start the game.
