The rules, step by step
Setup
Tzaar is played on a hexagonal board using 30 black and 30 white pieces, divided into 6 Tzaars, 9 Tzars, and 15 Tots per player. Players can choose to place pieces randomly on intersection points or use the standardized default setup to begin the game.
Objective
The primary goal of Tzaar is to eliminate all pieces of one type—either Tzaars, Tzars, or Tots—from your opponent, or to ensure they are unable to make a valid capturing move on their very first action of the game, securing victory through strategic dominance.
On your turn
White plays first with a single capture action, and subsequent turns consist of two actions: capturing an opponent piece, reinforcing your own stacks by combining pieces, or passing the second action. Movement must be in a straight line across vacant intersections without jumping over occupied spaces.
Scoring
While there are no traditional points, scoring is implicitly measured by your ability to capture opponent pieces, reduce their options, and build taller, more powerful stacks that outclass remaining single pieces and enemy columns.
Game end
The game concludes immediately when a player loses all pieces of any single category (Tzaars, Tzars, or Tots), or if a player is unable to execute a valid capture during their turn, resulting in an immediate loss.
Tips
Focus on protecting your Tzaars and larger stacks while aggressively targeting your opponent's vulnerable pieces. Controlling straight lines of movement and maintaining stack height are crucial for long-term survival and victory.
