The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up Ubongo Mini, first, shuffle all 32 puzzle cards and place them face down in a single deck in the center of the playing area. Each player then receives a complete set of 8 polyomino tiles, which they will keep in front of them. The game is played over 8 rounds, so ensure you have enough cards for the number of players: 16 cards for 2 players, 24 cards for 3 players, and all 32 cards for 4 players.
Objective
The main objective of Ubongo Mini is to be the player who has accumulated the most victory points by the end of the game. Victory points are earned by successfully completing puzzles quickly and efficiently, and by claiming additional cards from opponents who fail to complete their puzzles within the time limit.
On your turn
Each round begins with all players simultaneously drawing one puzzle card from the central deck and placing it face up in front of them. All players then race to fill the white spaces on their respective puzzle cards using their personal set of 8 polyomino tiles. Tiles can be rotated and flipped as needed to fit perfectly within the white area, ensuring no white spaces are left uncovered and no tiles extend beyond the puzzle's perimeter.
Scoring
As soon as a player successfully completes their puzzle, they must loudly shout "Ubongo!" This player then starts counting aloud, either to 20 (if playing with the easier side A of the cards) or to 30 (if playing with the harder side B, or a custom agreed-upon time limit). Any other players who manage to complete their puzzles before the count ends keep their completed puzzle card, which is worth 1 victory point. The player who first shouted "Ubongo!" and initiated the countdown then collects all puzzle cards that were not completed by other players within the time limit; these cards also count as victory points for them.
Game end
The game concludes after 8 full rounds of play. Alternatively, if the central deck of puzzle cards runs out before 8 rounds are completed, the game ends immediately. At this point, all players count their accumulated victory points from the cards they have collected throughout the game.
Tips
For new players or those seeking a more relaxed experience, it is recommended to start by using side A of the puzzle cards, which presents easier challenges. For a greater challenge, players can opt to use side B. Each puzzle card has at least three different combinations of polyomino tiles that can solve it, offering variety and replayability. Players can also agree on a custom time limit for the countdown at the start of the game to adjust difficulty.
