Players shuffle their decks and draw five cards to form their starting hand. Place the hero miniature on its starting space as indicated on the board, and place sidekick tokens on their designated starting spaces. Set each player's health dial to their hero's starting health value. Any special tokens, such as Houdini's Escape tokens or The Genie's Wish tokens, are placed near the board within easy reach.

Players aim to reduce their opponent's hero's health to zero through strategic movement, playing scheme cards, and engaging in combat. While sidekicks can be defeated, the game only ends when a hero is knocked out, making the protection and offensive use of your hero crucial to victory.

A turn in Unmatched: Houdini vs. The Genie consists of three steps: maneuver, play scheme, and attack. First, a player must maneuver, which involves moving their hero and sidekicks a certain number of spaces and then drawing a card. Next, the player may optionally play a scheme card, which provides various effects without initiating combat. Finally, the player may optionally attack an opponent by playing a combat card from their hand. Combat involves comparing attack and defense values, applying card effects, and dealing damage. Players alternate turns until one hero is defeated.

Unmatched: Houdini vs. The Genie is not a game with a scoring system. Instead, it is a direct combat game where the winner is determined by eliminating the opposing hero. There are no points to accumulate or objectives to complete beyond defeating the enemy hero. The focus is entirely on tactical combat and resource management to outmaneuver and overpower your opponent.

The game concludes immediately when one player's hero miniature is reduced to zero health. That hero is defeated, and the player controlling the other hero is declared the winner. There are no tie-breaking rules or additional rounds; the game ends as soon as a hero's health dial hits zero, emphasizing swift and decisive combat.
