The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up, players first choose a banker and receive starting money ($120 divided by the number of players). Then, one cube of each of the four starting railroads (New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington) is placed in their respective cities on the game board. The starting dividend price for each railroad is marked on the income track. All purple development cubes are placed in the 'unused development cubes' box. Finally, the stock for each railroad is placed next to its corresponding location on the board.

On your turn

After the decision is implemented, certain events may occur, such as a Chicago dividend or the end of the game being triggered.
Scoring
Dividends are paid out to shareholders based on the railroad's income. For Chicago dividends, the income is divided by the number of shares and rounded down. For general dividends, the income is divided by the number of shares and rounded up. Industrial cities increase a railroad's income based on their current development level, while mines increase income by one. Developed cities increase income by the second number shown in their hex, and timber/farm hexes provide no income increase.
Game end
The game concludes after a general dividend is paid if any of four conditions are met: three or more railroads have built all their track, three or more railroads have sold all their stock, three or fewer purple development cubes remain available, or Detroit is fully developed. The player with the most money at this point wins the game, with ties being possible.
