Setup
Each player gets 7 text cards, and one player is randomly chosen as the first judge.
The rules, step by step
Setup
To set up the game, each player receives 7 text cards from the deck. The remaining text cards are placed in a draw pile. The meme cards are also placed in a separate pile. A player is then randomly selected to be the first judge for the round.
Objective
The objective of 'What Do You Meme?' is to be the player who collects the most meme cards. Players achieve this by submitting the funniest text card to match the meme card chosen by the judge each round.
On your turn
In each round, the judge selects a meme card and places it on the easel for everyone to see. All other players then choose one text card from their hand that they believe best captions the meme. These text cards are passed face down to the judge. The judge shuffles the submitted text cards to ensure anonymity, reads them aloud, and then selects the one they find to be the funniest.
Scoring
The player who submitted the text card chosen by the judge as the funniest wins the meme card for that round. Each meme card collected by a player counts as one victory point. After a meme card is won, all text cards played in that round are discarded.
Game end
The game continues with players taking turns as the judge until everyone collectively decides to end the game. Once the game concludes, players count their collected meme cards. The player with the highest number of meme cards is declared the winner.
Tips
The rulebook includes two bonus rules. The first is the 'Freestyle' card: if you have a Freestyle card in your hand and wish to play it, you must announce it after the meme card is placed on the easel but before any other text cards are played. This allows you to create your own caption for the meme. The second bonus rule allows players to discard their current hand of text cards and draw a new hand of 7 cards by giving up one of their collected meme cards (a victory point).
