Setup

Place the bird tray with 3 face-up bird cards, create general supplies for food tokens and eggs, place food dice on the bird feeder, and prepare the bonus card deck.

The rules, step by step

Setup
To set up Wingspan Asia, first place the bird tray on the table and deal three bird cards face-up onto it from the shuffled bird deck. The remaining bird cards form a face-down draw pile. Create a general supply of food tokens and eggs. Roll the five food dice onto the bird feeder board. Shuffle the bonus card deck and place it face-down. For the Duo mode, use the Duo board and the Duo round-end goal tiles (marked with red corners). Randomly select four Duo goal tiles and place them in the designated spaces below the Duo board. Each player receives a player board, two bonus cards, five bird cards, eight action cubes in their chosen color, and five food tokens (one of each type). Players then discard five of their initial ten resources (bird cards + food tokens) in any combination. Each player chooses one of their two bonus cards to keep and discards the other. The first player token is given to the starting player.
Objective
The main objective in Wingspan Asia, similar to the base game, is to attract a diverse collection of birds to your aviaries across different habitats (forest, grassland, wetland) to earn the most victory points. Players achieve this by strategically playing bird cards, collecting food, laying eggs, and fulfilling various private and public objectives. At the end of the game, points from birds, bonus cards, end-of-round goals, cached food, and tucked cards are tallied, and the player with the highest total score wins.
On your turn
The game is played over four rounds. In each round, players take turns performing one of four main actions: playing a bird card, gaining food, laying eggs, or drawing bird cards. When playing a bird card, you must pay its food cost and place it in an appropriate habitat on your player board. When gaining food, you take food tokens from the bird feeder based on the number of birds in your forest habitat. When laying eggs, you place eggs on your bird cards in the grassland habitat. When drawing bird cards, you take cards from either the face-up display or the face-down deck in the wetland habitat. Each action involves placing an action cube on your player board, which also activates the powers of birds in that row from right to left.
Scoring
Scoring occurs at the end of the game. Points are awarded for: the victory points printed on each bird card in your aviaries, points from fulfilled bonus cards, points from completed end-of-round goals (only the player with the most contributions scores points for each goal), one point for each egg on your bird cards, one point for each food token cached on a bird card, and one point for each tucked card under a bird card. In Duo mode, an additional point is awarded for each token in your largest connected group of Duo tokens on the Duo board. The player with the highest total score wins.
Game end
Wingspan Asia concludes after the fourth round. After all players have placed their action cubes for the final round, follow these steps: first, activate any end-of-round bird powers (turquoise powers) in player order, starting with the first player. Second, score the end-of-round goals for the fourth round. Third, activate any end-of-game bird powers (yellow powers). Finally, use the scorepad to tally all points from birds, bonus cards, end-of-round goals, eggs, cached food, tucked cards, and Duo tokens. The player with the highest total score is declared the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the most unused food tokens wins. If still tied, players share the victory.
Tips
To excel in Wingspan Asia, focus on building an efficient engine of bird powers that synergize across your habitats. Pay close attention to your bonus cards and the public end-of-round goals, as these can provide significant victory points. In Duo mode, strategic placement of your Duo tokens on the Duo board is crucial for maximizing end-game scoring. Don't forget to manage your food and egg resources effectively, as they are vital for playing birds and laying eggs. Consider using the quick-start guides provided in the box for your first few games to get a feel for the game's flow and strategic options.
