Setup
Place the Dragon Guild board, Dragon Guild plaques, Card Display board, Round Tracker board, Objective tiles, coins, eggs, resource tokens, round indicator, and first player token. Each player receives a player board, player pieces, 6 coins, 1 egg, 3 Dragon cards, 3 Cave cards, and 3 resources.
The rules, step by step
Setup
Place the Dragon Guild board in the center of the table. Select one of the four Dragon Guild plaques at random and place it in the center of the Dragon Guild board, with the correct side facing up based on the number of players. Place the Card Display board next to it. Shuffle the 183 Dragon cards and place the deck nearby, revealing three Dragon cards on the board. Do the same with the 75 Cave cards. Prepare the Round Tracker board by placing the round indicator on Round 1. Shuffle the 10 Objective tiles and place four of them randomly on the designated spaces on the Round Tracker board, with a randomly chosen side facing up. Place the coins, eggs, and all resource tokens in a common area accessible to all players. Each player receives a player board, which is placed face up. Then, each player receives all player pieces of their chosen color: one adventurer (placed on the base camp of their player board), eight player markers, and one guild marker (placed on the 'Start' space of the Dragon Guild board). Player markers are limited, but all other pieces are unlimited. If you run out of unlimited pieces, use a suitable substitute. Each player also receives 6 coins, 1 egg (placed on one of the two nest pictograms on their player board, although there are two pictograms, players start with only one egg), 3 Dragon cards drawn from the deck, 3 Cave cards drawn from the deck, and 3 resources of their choice. Players should analyze their starting cards first, then decide which resources to take from the general supply based on those cards. Randomly choose a player to receive the first player token, and that player begins the game.
Objective
In Wyrmspan, a world where dragons of all shapes, colors, and sizes soar the skies, you are a dragonologist. You've discovered a hidden labyrinth beneath your lands and begin to explore it. Your goal is to attract these magnificent creatures and convince them to build their lairs in your underground sanctuary. The player who earns the most victory points by the end of the game wins.
On your turn
During a game of Wyrmspan, you will build a sanctuary for dragons. Your sanctuary starts with three excavated spaces (the leftmost ones) in the Ruby Cavern, Gold Grotto, and Amethyst Abyss. Throughout the game, you will expand these three caves from left to right by first excavating each empty space, and then placing dragons in these excavated spaces. In each round, you will perform one of five possible actions: excavating a space, enticing a dragon to live in an excavated space, or exploring individually the three caves on your player board. Wyrmspan takes place over four rounds. In each round, players take multiple turns clockwise, starting with the player who has the first player token. Players continue to take turns until they decide to pass. This usually happens when a player has used all their coins or has no more dragons in hand that they want or can afford to play. Once a player has passed, they cannot take any more turns in that round, but they can still gain benefits during other players' turns. Other players who have not passed continue to take turns until they run out of coins or choose to pass. Once all players have passed, the round ends. When players pass, they can keep resources, coins, cave cards, dragons, and eggs in nests for the next round. Never place or remove objects from other players' boards. All abilities you activate allow you to interact with the general supply, central boards, or your own player board. During your turn, select an action on your player board: excavate, entice, or explore. Move your adventurer there, pay the cost of that action, then perform the action.
Scoring
At the end of the game, you will first add up the points indicated by the markers on the Dragon Guild board. Then, you will count all the victory points printed on the visible dragons on your player board. After that, you will check any end-of-game abilities and score them. You will score one victory point for each egg, deposited resource, and hidden card. You will add up the points for the public objectives. Finally, you will receive one point for each coin and one point for every set of four elements (resources, dragon cards, and cave cards remaining) in any combination, rounded down. The player with the most victory points wins. In case of a tie, the player with the most visible dragons on their player board (excluding hidden cards) wins. If there is still a tie, the victory is shared.
Game end
The game ends after the fourth round. At the end of a round, players discard the coins and eggs they paid as costs on their player board. All 'once per round' dragon abilities are activated. Players activate 'once per round' abilities in turn order, starting with the player who started that round. If a player has multiple 'once per round' dragons on their player board, they can activate them in any order. The three Dragon cards and three Cave cards displayed face up are discarded, and three new cards of each type are revealed face up. Each player receives 6 coins and 1 egg. If possible, players can add the egg to any nest pictogram on their dragons or on their player board. Otherwise, they cannot gain the egg. The first player token moves to the next player clockwise. You will continue to play and build your sanctuary until the end of the fourth round. Then, the game ends, and you can proceed to calculate the final score.
Tips
It is recommended that players use most or all of their coins before passing, as they receive 6 coins at the start of each round. At the end of your turn, discard cards, coins, and resources so that you have a maximum of 9 cards, 9 coins, and 9 resource tokens. When excavating, you can only excavate one space at a time, unless a cave card indicates otherwise. You must excavate each cave from left to right. The first space in each cave is already excavated. Any cave card can be placed in any cave. The colors of the cave cards are purely aesthetic. When enticing, you can only play one dragon at a time, unless the dragon card indicates otherwise. A complete game board can contain a maximum of 12 dragons. All dragons have an ability or benefit marked on the cards. These are of four types: 'when played', 'if activated', 'once per round', and 'end of game'. Certain dragons and cave cards instruct you to deposit a resource on a dragon, hide a card under a dragon, deposit an egg, or pay an egg. Baby dragons function differently from other dragons if activated, as indicated on the card. Adult dragons with an 'if activated' ability allow you to activate that ability only when your adventurer lands on that dragon. The second ability on each baby dragon is not an 'if activated' ability, meaning it activates whenever that condition is met, regardless of whether it was triggered by your adventurer landing on that card or by another ability. When exploring, you must first choose which of the three caves you want to explore. Move your adventurer through the chosen cave and activate any 'if activated' ability you encounter, following these steps in order. Each time you enter a cave in a round, the cost is 1 coin. If you enter a second time, the cost is 1 coin and 1 egg. If you enter a third time, the cost is 1 coin and 2 eggs. When you pass through a cave for the second or third time in a round, pay eggs from any of your dragons or nests on your player board. Each time you enter a cave, leave the paid coin and egg(s) on your player board, covering the associated cost to track how many times you have explored that cave in that round. Move your adventurer from left to right through the cave along the path shown at the bottom of the cave, and activate all 'if activated' abilities that your adventurer encounters, in order from left to right. Each time your adventurer lands on a 'stop' sign (an empty space without a dragon) or reaches the end of a cave, your turn ends. Send your adventurer back to the base camp. Throughout the game, players advance in the Dragon Guild by moving their adventurer through their caves or by playing certain dragons or cave cards. Each time a player reaches one of the two brown spaces on the Dragon Guild track (the bottom or top space), they must immediately place an unused player marker on a square on the Dragon Guild plaque and collect the corresponding benefits. Each square can only contain one player marker. However, the bottom right space of each Dragon Guild plaque can contain any number of player markers. Once a player has placed their fourth player marker on the Dragon Guild plaque, they can continue to advance on the track, but they can no longer place any other player markers. If more than one player reaches a brown space in the same turn, they select their bonuses in turn order, starting with the active player. If there is an available space, that player can collect the same bonus multiple times.
