The rules, step by step
Setup
The game of Yinsh is played on a large hexagonal grid board with concentric lines. Two players compete, one controlling white rings and the other controlling black rings. To start, players take turns placing their rings onto any intersections of the grid until all five rings for each player (ten rings total) are positioned on the board. No chips are on the board at the beginning of the game, setting the stage for tactical movement and placement.
Objective
The main objective of Yinsh is to be the first player to score three points. A player scores one point by forming a consecutive row of five chips of their color on the board. Because each scored point requires removing a row of five chips, players must successfully achieve this feat three separate times to claim victory.
On your turn
On each turn, a player must first place a chip of their own color face-up inside one of their rings. Afterward, the player slides that same ring in a straight line along the grid away from the newly placed chip, ending its movement on any unoccupied intersection. Rings may slide freely, jump over unoccupied spaces, or jump over single or multiple chips of either color. However, jumping over chips causes them to flip to the opposite color, and any turn ends immediately upon completing a jump over chips.
Scoring
Whenever a player forms a straight row of five chips of their color, that row must be removed from the board immediately. The scoring player then takes one of their rings from the board and places it into their designated scoring marker spot in the corner of the board to mark one point.
Game end
The game concludes instantly when one player successfully scores their third point by forming and removing their third row of five chips. That player is declared the winner of the match.
Tips
Strategic placement and movement are critical in Yinsh. Players should carefully consider how sliding rings and flipping chips affect both their own progress and their opponent's potential rows. Creating multiple threats simultaneously and anticipating jump consequences will greatly improve your chances of victory.
