The rules, step by step
Setup
The game includes two card holders and 54 cards. To set up, shuffle all 54 cards thoroughly and then divide them into two roughly equal piles. Place each pile into one of the two card holders. Position the card holders on the table so that all players can comfortably reach them. The player deemed 'most zen' or chosen randomly starts the game.
Objective
The main objective of Yogi is to be the last player left in the game. Players are eliminated if they fail to meet any of the card challenges, either current or previously accumulated, or if they cannot draw a card at the start of their turn.
On your turn
On a player's turn, they must draw one card from either of the two piles (their choice). They then read the instruction on the drawn card aloud so all players are aware of the challenge. After reading, the player must fulfill the condition of the newly drawn card, in addition to all conditions from any cards they drew on previous turns. Cards must be placed visibly in front of the active player.
Scoring
Yogi is an elimination-style game, so there is no traditional scoring system. Players are either in the game or out, based on their ability to maintain all active card conditions. The focus is on physical flexibility and creative interpretation of the rules rather than accumulating points.
Game end
A player is eliminated from the game if they cannot fulfill the conditions of any of their drawn cards, whether it's the current card or any previous ones. Additionally, if a player cannot draw a card at the beginning of their turn (e.g., if both piles are empty), they are also eliminated. The game concludes when only one player remains, and that player is declared the winner.
Tips
Players are permitted to modify their body position at any point during the game, provided they continue to meet all active card instructions. It is crucial that no card is hidden under clothing or accessories such as bracelets, watches, rings, or necklaces. There are two alternative game variants: 'Hardcore,' where players start with two face-down cards and turn one over each turn, passing it to another player after fulfilling its condition, and 'Teams,' where players divide into teams, and any team member can fulfill a challenge for their team.
