The rules, step by step
Setup
Yokohama is set up by arranging the modular area tiles in the center of the table based on player count, flanked by the score board and management boards for the church and customs. Each player receives a color-coded player board, a president token, eight assistants, four shops, four trading houses, and starting resources including money (Yen) and order cards. The board is populated with base resources and components according to the rules.
Objective
The main objective of Yokohama is to accumulate the most fame points by acting as a merchant in 19th-century Japan. Players must travel around the city collecting basic resources (tea, fish, copper, silk), fulfilling order cards, acquiring foreign agents, completing technology cards, and securing achievements on the central board to build a successful business empire.
On your turn
A player's turn consists of two main phases. First, place assistants onto the board (up to three across different areas, paying Yen if placing where an opponent's president is). Second, move your president following a path of your assistants, ending in an area with your own assistant and no opposing president. Calculate your power in that area (president + assistants + shops + trading houses + station tokens) and execute the corresponding area's action based on your power level. Finally, recover your assistants.
Scoring
Scoring happens primarily at the end of the game. Players earn points for majority control of the church management board and customs board, cumulative industry points from acquired technology cards, completed sets of foreign agent country symbols, leftover resources, unspent import tokens, and victory point milestones achieved throughout the game.
Game end
The game triggers its final phase when one of five end-game conditions is met: a player places their fifth assistant on a scoring trigger space, the order card stack is depleted, a player builds all eight shops, or a player builds all four trading houses. After the triggering round, one final round is played so everyone gets an equal number of turns before final scoring.
Tips
Strategic positioning of your assistants acts as breadcrumbs for your president's movement. Balancing the acquisition of money, resources, and technology while keeping an eye on your opponents' positions is crucial. Don't neglect the church and customs boards, as end-game majority bonuses provide significant scoring swings.
