Setting up Zombicide: Undead or Alive involves assembling the modular game board tiles as specified by the chosen scenario. Players select survivor characters, placing their respective dashboards, starting gear, and miniatures in the designated starting areas. Zombie miniatures, tokens, and equipment decks are sorted and placed nearby, ready for action.

The main objective is cooperative survival and completion of specific scenario goals. Players must work together as survivors of a zombie outbreak in the Old West, balancing exploration, combat, and rescue tasks to achieve victory before being overwhelmed.

During a player's turn, their survivor receives a standard number of actions, typically three, which can be spent on movement, combat attacks, searching rooms for weapons and items, trading with other survivors, or activating special class abilities.

Players earn experience points each time they successfully eliminate a zombie. Accumulating experience points moves survivors up the danger bar, unlocking powerful new skills and abilities while also increasing the spawn rate and difficulty of incoming zombies.

The game concludes successfully when the scenario's primary objective is achieved. Conversely, failure occurs if any survivor dies, if a companion is eliminated, or if specific defeat conditions outlined in the scenario are triggered.
