In the game of Night Watchman of Hydrangea, players are squad leaders of night watchmen of a city named Hydrangea. Their duty is to protect the city by recruiting and deploying watchmen properly. Watchmen's unity and diversity are the keys to strength of their squads. Whose squad will excel the others?

You assemble 16 member cards and deploy them in 4x4 grid. You start with four members in the center of your grid and deploy one member around them each turn. Each member has their race, favorite weapon, and religion.

When a column, a row, or a quadrant (2x2 grid including a corner) is filled with four members in your grid, you have a chance to score. For each category (race, weanpon, and religion), check if these four members are qualified by being united (all 4 have the same characteristics) or diversified (all 4 have different characteristics). Depending on how many categories they are qualified in, you score victory points.

The game ends when all players have 16 members in their grid. You win the game if you have the most points among players.

The only change for the second edition was to rotate the cards, from portrait to landscape orientation.
