Finantati de Franta, suedezii si-au impins avantajul catre cel mai valoros aliat al Imparatului, Maximilian de Bavaria. Desi catolica, Franta a cautat sa limiteze puterea Habsburgilor sustinand financiar regele suedez. Intre 1632 si 1648, Bavaria si zona inconjuratoare au devenit un front crucial pentru a scoate Bavaria din acest wargame. Suedezii au avut succes pana cand soarta le-a rapit regele, iar fortele lor suprasolicitate nu au putut mentine castigurile. Dupa infrangerea suferita la Nordlingen in 1634, Franta a fost nevoita sa joace un rol mai activ. O serie de campanii oscilante au urmat, pe masura ce Armee d Allemagne a securizat trecerile Rinului, impingand razboiul inapoi in inima Bavariei.
